The Rotary Foundation is designed to fund international Rotary club and district humanitarian programs to improve the quality of life, providing health care, clean water, food, education and other essential needs, primarily in the developing world.

One of the Foundation's major humanitarian projects is End Polio Now, a two-decade long project to eradicate the polio virus worldwide. Through its educational programs, the Foundation provides funding for some 1,200 students to study abroad each year. Grants are also awarded to university teachers to teach in developing countries and for exchanges of business and professional people. Every Rotarian is urged to contribute a minimum of $100 each year to the Foundation.

During the Rotary year of 2007-08 under the leadership of Gov. David Moyers, District 5280 Rotarians and friends contributed a total of $1,576,062.49 towards annual giving, which is $684.65 per capita.  During the Rotary year of 2009-2010 under the leadership of Gov. Suzanne Sundberg, District 5280 Rotarians and friends contributed more than $1,992,000 towards annual giving as the District continued its leadership in support of The Rotary Foundation.
