Captain Kip Louttit was appointed as the Executive Director of the Marine Exchange of Southern California in January 2013. A graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy, he served in the United States Coast Guard (USCG) for 30 years prior to retiring with the rank of Captain. Captain Louttit’s experience includes 10 years at sea in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the Bering, Mediterranean, and Caribbean Seas. He had six years in command of three different Coast Guard cutters and two years as commanding officer of USCG Integrated Support Command in San Pedro. Following retirement from the Coast Guard, Captain Louttit worked for two consulting firms on Coast Guard and Pentagon work.
Captain Louttit leads a staff of 20 civilians and a Coast Guard detail of six active duty Operations Specialists with an annual budget of $3.1 million. The Marine Exchange of Southern California, a non-profit organization first established in 1923, is unique among the nation’s Vessel Traffic Services in having a public/private partnership with the Coast Guard. It has evolved into one of the world’s foremost organizations of its kind and uses state-of-the-market electronic and computer technology to provide vessel traffic management and maritime information services for the maritime community within the Los Angeles and Long Beach harbor areas and the Southern California region. The Marine Exchange continuously works to promote a safe, secure, efficient, reliable, and environmentally sound maritime transportation system.
Captain Louttit was a Sloan Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and holds master’s degrees from MIT and Golden Gate University. He is an avid and active sailor with extensive experience in offshore races. He has been a speaker at the U.S. Sailing Safety at Sea Seminar in Annapolis since 2008 and actively crews in racing and cruising sailboats offshore as navigator and bowman. He and his family live in Rancho Palos Verdes where he serves in the Coast Guard Auxiliary and as an Assistant Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America, where he enjoys leading Scouts on outdoor and volunteer community service activities. |

Redondo Beach Housing Crisis Update
Jul 31, 2019 12:15 PM
Our diverse community is friendly and happy. When you move to Redondo you are part of a community that values tradition, safety and education. We are proud of our area and expect it to be clean and well maintained. Our little corner of paradise is home to Redondo’s largest employer, Northrup Grumman. Our schools are the envy of the South Bay. Our popular hotels on Marine Avenue helped save Redondo Beach’s budget when sales tax dipped. Plus, we are freeway close to everything the LA area has to offer. The Metro Green Line stops at Marine & Redondo Avenue and will be expanding to the Galleria by 2028. We work hard, we play fair and we are pleased to live here. |

Dear Fellow Rotarians, Again this year we are hosting National Night Out at Anderson Park in Redondo Beach. There will be exhibits, games and other activities for the community. Last year, members of our Rotary Club attended and bbq’d hotdogs for the attendees and we are looking for volunteers to help again this year. The event runs from 3 pm until 9 pm. We provide everything, all you have to do is cook the dogs and place them on buns. We will need at least two people during that time period and they can work the full shift or in 2-3 hour increments. If you are willing to help out, please give me a call at 805-660-4229. Thanks, |

Heading back to school can be stressful for students and their parents when they don't have the school supplies necessary for academic success. Starting the school year with a new backpack filled with school supplies can help students feel confident and ready to meet the educational challenges during the school year and achieve success. The Salvation Army's Back to School backpack distribution program provides backpacks filled with school supplies to children at select South Bay Public Schools. |

Chief Pilot of the Goodyear Blimp
Aug 28, 2019 12:15 PM
The Pilot-in-Charge (PIC) is responsible for all aspects of the airship's operation. The PIC is ultimately responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the airship and, along with the Assistant Pilot-in-Charge (APIC), supervises and directs the training and development of all other pilots, department chiefs and crew members. Based on weather conditions and other circumstances, the decision to fly at any time belongs to the Pilot-in-Charge. One of the most important jobs of the PIC is to monitor and confirm that Blimp pilot candidates are prepared to safely operate the Blimp. The PIC must hold a commercial Lighter-than-Air (LTA) rating and an instrument rating, and each Goodyear Blimp pilot candidate must successfully undergo and complete a comprehensive Goodyear Lighter-than-Air flight training program to help them successfully pass the Federal Aviation Administration requirements to obtain an LTA airship rating.
The Public Relations (PR) Specialist is the communications representative and planning agent for the Blimp at his or her designated hangar. With a primary focus on generating public relations opportunities at the local and national level, the PR Specialist helps to tactically deploy the airship to televised events, customer-related initiatives and community-based events. The Airship Public Relations Specialist works to capitalize on media opportunities and partnerships that will lead to positive press for the Blimp and Goodyear.

James Webb Space Telescope
Dec 04, 2019 12:15 PM
Wayne Ung of Northrop Grumman will tell us about the recently completed James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). It is still here in Redondo Beach waiting for a ride in 2021 from French Guiana that will take it 940,000 miles into space. It will orbit the sun, not the earth. The telescope has a huge increase in capabilities over the Hubble Space Telescope. The project is an international collaboration among NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and costs nearly $10 billion. Our club heard an early briefing on the JWST in April 2016. Since then the many challenges have been resolved with ground-breaking technological advances. |

WE PROMOTE PEACETogether with our partners, Rotarians promote peace, prevent and cure disease, provide clean water and sanitation, improve the health of mothers and children, support basic education and literacy, and provide economic and community development. The World Peace Conference 2020 will give each of us, Rotarians and non-Rotarians from all sectors of society, an opportunity to come together, learn from experts, become inspired and leave with immediate action plans to implement within our communities. Together, we can make the changes needed to create world peace! OUR MISSIONThe mission of the World Peace Conference 2020 is to bring together experts with solutions to major issues that are occurring in our personal lives, homes, schools, businesses, and communities, not just in Southern California, but, also, around the world. We are inviting leaders from health care, academia, government, public safety, religions, business, and communities to meet together to share the solutions presented by experts. The format will allow for action plans to be developed such that real and measurable actions can be undertaken when attendees return home. In addition, the conference will showcase learnings and positive change that have occurred in the four years, since the Rotary World Peace Conference 2016. |

Update on Redondo Beach District #1
Jan 22, 2020 12:15 PM
Council Nils Nehrenheim holds district meetings once a month to provide you with an opportunity to talk with him individually on issues that are important to you.
Councilman Nehrenheim was elected in May in 2017, sweeping change into Redondo Beach. He represents District 1, which is everything South of Torrance Blvd. in Redondo. Councilman Nehrenheim was born and raised in San Pedro, moving to Redondo, over a dozen years ago. He’s an LA County Lifeguard and a small business owner. He got his start in Redondo politics while walking through the Riviera Village Summer Festival, meeting the South Bay Parklands Conservancy. Councilman Nehrenheim helped co-authored Measure C, a land-use initiative in the Harbor zone that passed in every District & every precinct in the City of Redondo. Measure C went on to the California Coastal Commission which was passed without any changes, a first in the history of the Coastal Commission. Today, he works closely with the Mayor, Bill Brand on a variety of issues and is working to bring many changes to South Redondo. From bringing Olympic events such as Open water swim and improvements to the Riviera Village, he is here to make our slice of heaven we call home, that much better.” |
